In 2020, electric cars represented 10.5% of new car sales in Europe. How do BEVs work? How did they integrate into our daily lives and how do they have every chance of being even more present tomorrow: an overview.
How do BEVs work?
The acronym BEV stands for “Battery Electric Vehicle”. This type of vehicle therefore does not use gasoline or diesel to move forward, but does use electricity. BEVs have numerous advantages, including the ability to reduce the production of CO2 emissions.
The motor is powered by a set of batteries, capable of storing between 15 and 100 kWh. The autonomy capacity depends on the model of your car: it can range from around 150 km to more than 630 km for the most expensive models. This difference is due to the type of battery chosen by the manufacturer. At present, The lithium ion battery Is the one with the best capabilities
Another difference with a conventional vehicle: the electric car does not have a gearbox. All you have to do is accelerate to release current and therefore move forward.
How to charge your battery electric vehicle
How do you recharge your BEV battery? Simply by connecting your vehicle to the electrical network using a cable.
Most drivers charge their electric vehicles at home or at work. To charge your car at home, you can use
a conventional household outlet with the charging cable supplied with your vehicle. You will benefit from approximately 10 to 15 km of recharged autonomy per hour.
However, it should be noted that using a domestic outlet is not the most recommended solution: it is the source of safety problems and causes wear and tear on electrical installations.

Another option: have a charging station installed in the form of a wallbox or reinforced socket. The autonomy will be greater: around 20 to 40 km of autonomy recharged per hour.
The smart terminal developed by Qovoltis is linked to a mobile application, to be able to manage your charging remotely. In particular, she knows how to adapt her
charging power according to the power available on your installation and is equipped with a unique system for optimizing consumption.
BEV: a spectacular increase in sales
Over the past 10 years, the number of electric vehicle registrations has literally exploded. While there were less than 1,000 BEVs in 2010, more than 110,000 BEVs were registered in France in 2020*.

Europe is following the same pattern: sales of electric vehicles have doubled in the last year. Unlike the conventional car market, the electric vehicle market does not seem to be experiencing a crisis.
Many motorists have benefited from subsidies granted by the State, determined to switch as many vehicles as possible to electric mode. Some big cities have also banned the most polluting vehicles in their centers.
The State is committed to electric cars
The State has adopted a clear position in favor of BEVs. The objective: the end of the sale of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles using
fossil fuels by 2040. On that date, the sale and purchase of combustion cars, i.e. all models powered by gasoline or diesel, will be officially prohibited.
Provisions have been put in place with the Energy Transition Law for Green Growth (LTECV) and the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM). Elles
include the possibility of allowing very low-emission vehicles (operating on electricity or hydrogen) to benefit from privileged traffic and parking conditions. But also the development of charging infrastructures.
Financial aid is also provided. Among them:
- Exemption from tax on registration certificates for vehicles whose source of energy is exclusively electricity
- the ecological bonus/penalty system, awarded according to the pollution released by your vehicle
- the conversion bonus to help buy or rent a new or used low-emission vehicle in exchange for the disposal of an old polluting vehicle
The automotive landscape in the coming years should therefore mostly be embodied by electric vehicles. In any case, this is the wish of the government, at national and European level. In terms of charging solutions, Qovoltis is establishing itself on the market, thanks to its intelligent and innovative terminal. Designed to be as stylish as it is efficient, it contains the most advanced technologies ever implemented to charge electric vehicles.
