Cost of charging in business: who pays?

In France, the law requires companies with a car park with more than 20 spaces to install charging stations. The aim? Facilitate the use of electric vehicles for employees. But who should pay for the charge? How can I reimburse the costs associated with powering electric cars? Our answers.

Charging at the workplace: how do you bill your employees?

While there is no obligation for businesses to cover the charging costs of their employees, in practice, many of them cover some or all of them. As an employer, you have several options: make charging free only during certain hours, limit charging to a certain number of kWh per month or more simply, bill your employees for charging to the nearest kWh.

The best solution to simplify re-invoicing? Install smart and connected charging stations. Chez Qovoltis, our wallboxes incorporate a meter to precisely measure the energy used during charging and to bill only the energy delivered to your employees. Easy to use, our terminals thus make it possible to distinguish between the consumption of each employee. In addition, thanks to our mobile application, it is possible to control them remotely and to control the vehicle load from other locations.

Electric vehicle charging costs: focus on the transport premium

This system allows the employer to cover the costs associated with the supply of electric vehicles (C. trav., art. L. 3261-3) as part of the home-work trips of their employees. The amount and terms of the Transport premium are decided by the employer after consulting the CSE or during a company agreement. For 2023, its payment is not conditional on certain employees and may concern all staff.

The transport bonus is exempt from social security contributions and income tax up to the limit of €700 per year and per employee. This amount concerns the coverage of electric vehicle power costs for the year 2023 only. Note that this bonus can be combined with the sustainable mobility package (FMD) up to a limit of €700 per year and per employee.

Who has to pay for the installation of charging stations?

Since January 1, 2023, the ADVENIR bonus is no longer available to businesses wishing to install charging stations in their car park. The only exceptions are automotive service businesses and short-term vehicle rental businesses. The installation costs are therefore borne by the employer.

For professionals, however, installing charging stations offers numerous long-term advantages, especially if you plan to green all or part of your fleet.
